:-) The OGs — Before Emoji

Long before your phone put a cartoon face in your pocket  :-)   long before the algorithm decided what was funny, long before the feed, the verified checkmarks, the sponsored content — there was a colon and a parenthesis. That's it. That's the whole thing.

:-) was the first meme. :-D   No, really. It predates everything. Scott Fahlman typed it on a bulletin board in 1982 and from that moment, humans online had a way to say "I'm kidding. I'm human. I'm here."   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And then they spread. Person to person. No algorithm. No distribution deal. No VC funding  ;-)  Just people typing weird little faces at each other across dial-up modems because it felt good. Because it meant something. Because  :-P  is funnier than any emoji that ever got Unicode approval.

The Japanese had it too. (◕‿◕)   Kaomoji. Face characters. A whole other visual language that grew up in parallel — more expressive, more elaborate, completely different aesthetic. ヽ(°〇°)ﾉ   Two internet cultures, independently inventing the same joy.

AIM. MSN Messenger. IRC. ICQ. Forums. Guestbooks. :-))   Every subculture had its emoticons. Every community had its favorites. The ones that meant "I like you" without having to say it.  (づ｡◕‿‿◕｡)づ  The ones that meant "I'm devastated" when you couldn't find the words.  (T_T)

You know the ones. You typed them. Probably on a keyboard that made a satisfying click. Probably in a chat window that made a sound when a message arrived.   (^_^;)   Those were good sounds.
